THE OKEFENOKEE SWAMP

Plan ahead! This one's worth dedicating a full day to.

You can't come to Waycross and not go to the Okefenokee. One of the most wild, untouched natural areas in the country, the swamp is right in our backyard and it earns every bit of its reputation. Take a guided boat tour, walk the boardwalks, spot alligators and herons and things that'll make your jaw drop. The Okefenokee Swamp Park offers a great entry point, including a viewing tower, wildlife exhibits, and guided tours. And if you really want to go deep, literally, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge has canoe trails you won't forget.

LAURA S. WALKER STATE PARK

Only a few minutes down the road!

This one practically shares a fence with us. Laura S. Walker State Park is a local favorite for a reason: peaceful lake, hiking and kayaking, picnic spots under the pines, and even a golf course (The Links at Laura Walker, a par-72 designed by Steve Burns) if you feel like swinging some clubs. It's a great half-day option when you want a change of scenery without going far.

COASTAL GA & NORTH FL BEACHES

Only an hour or two out!

What a lot of people don't realize: you're less than an hour from some seriously beautiful Georgia coastline. Jekyll Island and St. Simons Island are the headliners: Jekyll for its quieter, more natural vibe and the iconic Driftwood Beach, St. Simons for wide sandy stretches, the historic lighthouse, and better dining options. If you're up for a little more adventure, take the ferry to Cumberland Island National Seashore where you'll find wild horses, unmarked beaches, and the ruins of Dungeness Mansion. No amenities, so pack what you need and go.

And if you're feeling a quick Florida run, Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island is right across the border with a charming downtown and great waterfront energy.

GOLF COURSES

For the ones who can't fully unplug.

If your idea of unwinding involves a fairway, you've got options. Okefenokee Golf Club is close and laid-back and great for a casual round with friendly locals. Blueberry Plantation Golf Club in Alma is a step up if you want a more polished championship experience. And of course, The Links at Laura Walker is right down the road for a scenic, affordable round surrounded by tall pines.

DOWNTOWN WAYCROSS

Small town with solid charm!

Waycross is a real South Georgia town with real South Georgia character. Stroll the historic downtown, check out the Okefenokee Heritage Center (great for railroad history, Native American exhibits, and regional art), and pop into Obediah's Okefenoke for a look at what 19th-century swamp life actually looked like. Farmers markets, local events, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that reminds you why you left the interstate are all part of the deal.

SHOP AT ST.JOHNS TOWN CENTER

Head about an hour and a half south in Jacksonville, Florida you'll get all the city energy you need.

Sometimes you need a little civilization. St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville is an open-air shopping and dining destination with over 175 stores: think Nordstrom, Apple, Anthropologie, a full lineup of restaurants, and the kind of afternoon that ends with more bags than you planned on. It's a great excuse to clean up, head south, and remind yourself that you're only an hour from a real city while somehow still sleeping under South Georgia stars every night. Perfect for a day trip when the mood strikes or when someone in your group needs a little retail therapy.
